Parents... input please.... Trouble with 14yr old teenage stepson?

Today while horse-playing @ school with his friends, my stepsons cell phone got it's screen cracked...(apparently it was in his backpack and a friend kicked the backpack)..I called my husband at work.. At 1st my husband wanted the name of the student so that the parents could pay. well, my stepson refuses to name his friend, because he doesn't want to get him into trouble.. He also doesn't want to the school to know, because horse playing @ school is an automatic dentition and he says if his dad says anything to make him get dentition, he will refuse to go to school.. My husband called back and said that if he wont give up a name, then he will have to reimburse his dad what it costs to fix the phone.. My stepsons response was that he works hard for his allowance and doesn't want to pay for the phone.. I told him that doesn't he think he and his dad work hard for our pay check?? And besides, we weren't the ones goofing off.. So he said he'd rather have a ****** up phone then pay...
