Does the heart have feeling/nerves?
the heart does in fact have both nerves that connect to it and affect it (sympathetic nervous system) and also receptors for various hormones that can have large effects on heart function (eg. epinephrine). In fact there is a condition called "broken heart syndrome" or Takotsubo cardiomyopathy in which extreme physical or emotional stress and the resulting high level of sympathetic stimulation can lead to actual physical damage to the heart muscle. I have actually seen this in my hospital practice. However, it typically presents with symptoms similar to a heart attack with severe chest pain, shortness of breath and often progresses to hypotension and shock.
