"Religious" people and their political affiliations: ironic?

OK, first let me say that I do not claim to be either democrat or republican... I think at times (like now), they can both be two extremes of idiocracy... but I noticed something kind of strange... it seems that the majority of christians, and members of some other organized religions that preach love thy neighbor, etc, are republican. This is strange to me because it also seems like MOST republicans are a little selfish... they complain and complain about "spreading the wealth around" and "everyone should be able to fend for themselves!"...they usually have no problem with cutting spending on government programs that help people here and increasing spending on killing people over there.... and then they sit in church and listen to preaching about how they should be more "christlike".... is this every man for himself way of thinking very christlike?
