My son wants to self feed and he plays with his feet while eating...?

So My son will be 6 months in 1 week. he only eat purees so im very cautious to let him feed himself. He can grab the spoon and stick it in his mouth but doesnt know to put it into the bowl he would rather take the bowl and try to eat it! Does this mean its too early for him to self feed himself? and if not how did you start letting your kids self feed. Did you just give them the spoon and bowl and cleaned up the huge mess afterwards or what> sorry this is my first >< also whoud i stpo him from playing while he eats? He always finds a toe or a piece on his chair it drives me insane. he has gone as far to turn himself around to watch TV!!!! Like meal time is boring! I turn the TV off and then he stares off at the fan! I try to redirect his attention but he could give a care less lol. Thanks ahead of time.
